Unadilla River

Description: The Unadilla heads in NY counties of Madison and Oneida. It is a modest size river never getting too large. The Unadilla (footnote) ends at its confluence with the Susquehanna River at Sidney.

Trip Description:
For much of the trip the river is down below ground level or away from
the highway so it gives one the impression of being remote as few houses
or farms are visible from the river.

Hunts Pond State Park is just up the road from South New Berlin. The park
has tent sites available.

Access:
In: The put in is about 2 miles north of the Hamlet of South New Berlin on Rt. 8.
Watch for a NY State fisherman's access on the East. Parking for 8 cars.
Rt 8 goes north out of Sidney.

Hazards: 10-19-2006 No hazards reported.

Water Conditions: Runnable Spring and after heavy rain.

Gauge: A good run if the gauge at Rockdale reads 700 cfs and 4.75 ft. At 3.6 ft.
and 100 cfs some very low spots above Mount Upton in the last mile or so.

10-19-06 Gage readings of 600 cfs and 5.6 ft. at Rockdale. River was quite
flat with only a few riffs.
10-01-08 Gage readings of 150 cfs and 4.6 ft Rockdale, NY. Upper section had
plenty of water but the lower section was difficult to pass through.

Trip Description:
From Mt. Upton to Unadilla on the Susquahanna Fairy long section very near
beginning was flat and boring, then river got interesting, a few good runs.

Access:

9/3/2008: Guage in Rockdale was 4.52. It would have been much better
with perhaps 2 more inches of water.

footnote: Unadilla: "Place of Meeting" (Oneida). Name of the Tuscarora and Oneida
village located at the mouth of the Unadilla River on both sides of the Susquehanna River
at Sydney, NY. The village, which had been evacuated, was destroyed by Col. William Butler
in the fall of 1778.
